This is the second time the European Research Council (ERC) awards Dr Joan Seoane a prestigious "Proof of Concept" grant. This grant represents an economic injection to the research conducted by the group Expressió Gènica i Càncer (Gene Expression and Cancer), directed by Joan Seoane, which focuses on stem cells and the development of more effective anticancer treatments for brain tumours, specifically to fight glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a very aggressive type of cancer with a very low survival rate.

In this edition, Dr Seoane's project will focus on the development of a more efficient and safer therapeutic anti-body based on a double action mechanism which eliminates cancerous stem cells and reactivates the tumour's own immunology system. The field of study of Dr Seoane's group is focused on glioblastoma multiforme (GMB), and how to solve and meet therapeutic needs through the development of personalised therapies which specifically eliminate cancerous stem cells (CMC) and also reactivate the immune system to fight against the tumour.

Another researcher was also awarded one of the Proof of Concept grants conferred by the European Research Council in this second edition, the CSIC researcher L. Maria Lois, from the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), located at the UAB Campus. L. Maria Lois will be conducting a project entitled “SUMOblock: Blocking SUMO conjugation as drug discovery strategy”, which explores the identification of new molecules in Biomedicine.
