The Master in Tourism and Humanities thus concludes the training of its first class of students, specialized in the management of products, services and touristic destinations with humanities and culture as a key feature for their development.

Philosopher Marina Garcés, whose work focuses on the field of politics and critical thinking, proposes to link tourism analysis to the "extractivist" economic paradigm, the capitalist growth model consisting in the exploitation of one location’s common resources to their exhaustion. Normally this paradigm applies to the context of current emerging countries and their exploitation of energetic and natural resources, but Garcés argues whether the current "extractivism" might be tourism. According to Garcés, the challenge is unchecking Barcelona from that unfettered capitalism.

The conference, with free entry but limited capacity, also forms part of the exhibition "Shared Cities. European Prize for Urban Public Space 2014", which can be visited at the CCCB until June 4.
