The UAB to celebrate International Day against LGBTIQ-phobia with a commemoration of twenty years of equal marriage

The exhibition "20 Years After Equal Marriage: Memory, Activism and Future Challenges of the LGBTIQ+ Community" will be inaugurated in the entrance hall of the Faculty of Law on Thursday 14 May at 1:30 p.m. The event will be attended by UAB Secretary General Esther Zapater; Head of Equality Policies at the Faculty of Law Montserrat Pi; and Dean of the Faculty of Law Ricardo Esteban. The exhibition, promoted by the Equality and Diversity Service in collaboration with UAB Culture and the Faculty of Law, will be open to the entire community from 6 to 29 May.

The exhibition has been prepared by the Spanish Ministry for Equality in collaboration with the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Trans and Bisexuals, Intersexuals and more (FELGTBI+), the Pedro Zerolo Foundation, and the Network of Universities for Diversity (RUD), and commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the approval of Law 13/2005, by which Spain fully legalised civil marriage and adoption for same-sex couples. Through photographs, posters and historical documents, the exhibition traces the journey of the LGBTIQ+ movement from the end of the Franco era to the present day, highlighting how collective action has made a profound social and legislative transformation possible.

Twenty years later, celebrating this milestone is not just about looking back: it is also about recognising that the path towards real and effective equality for LGBTIQ+ people is not over yet. The UAB joins in with the conviction that the university must be a space where diversity is not tolerated but rather acknowledged and defended, and where each member of the community can live and express themselves freely and without fear.
