The UAB to award an honorary doctorate to surgeon Julio García Aguilar

The UAB Governing Council meeting, held 13 May, approved the appointment as honorary doctor of Julio García Aguilar, head of the department of colorectal surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He was proposed for the award by the Faculty of Medicine. Doctor García Aguilar has a long career in the fields of clinical care, teaching and research. The investiture ceremony, still without a date, will take place soon.

"His proven track record of excellence in the field of research and teaching and his relationship with the UAB make him an ideal candidate for appointment as an honorary doctor of the Univesitat Autònoma de Barcelona," included the proposal for his nomination to the award.

Dr Julio García Aguilar is a colorectal surgeon born in Toledo, trained at the Complutense University of Madrid and who later completed his training in surgery and colorectal surgery in the United States (Boston and Minneapolis). He has a long career in the fields of clinical care, teaching and research.

He is currently Chief of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York; Professor of Surgery at Weil Cornell Medical College in New York; and a member of the Colorectal Research Group. He is also a member of eleven scientific societies, an honorary member of six international scientific societies, and has published more than 125 articles in high-impact journals. He has supervised more than 50 postdoctoral students.

Dr García Aguilar has had a very active relationship with the UAB in recent years, in the form of accepting visits from UAB students and lecturers in Minnesota, San Francisco, and New York. In addition, he has collaborated on different studies with UAB research groups, which have led to the obtaining of grants, communication and publication of works. The proposal for his nomination also highlights "the friendly, welcoming and sensitive attitude with which he has always treated the UAB".
