The UAB Takes Part In The Constitution Of The Universities Network for Diversity (RUD)
The Autonomous University of Barcelona is part of the recent constituted Universities Network for Diversity (RUD), established at the congress hosted by the University of Valencia on the 16th and 17th of December.
Pinpointing the origin of March 8 has always been a struggle, especially to find a concrete and common event in which to establish it. Despite this, there is a consensus in marking the struggle of American textile workers in the late 19th century and early 20th century and the repression they suffered as the inspiration for this day.
The Observatory for Equality went as the UAB’s representative to the congress held in Valencia on the 16th and 17th of December, where 25 representatives of the units, offices and observatories of Spanish public universities working on affective, sexual, gender, family, ethnic-cultural and religious diversity met.
On the 16th of December, at the La Nau Cultural Centre of the University of Valencia, a congress took place where the RUD Network was constituted, its regulations were drafted and possible joint activities to be carried out as a Network were agreed upon. The network will work to ensure that universities are respectful spaces regarding two areas: sexual and gender diversity (sexual orientation, bodily diversity, affective diversity, gender identity and expression) and diversity based on origin, culture, beliefs and the like.
This network aims to connect the different offices and observatories of Spanish universities to have a tool for communication, dissemination and joint proposal development.
The congress also counted with, among others, a conference by Marina Echebarría, Professor of Commercial Law at the University of Valladolid and President of the LGBT People’s Participation Council, under the name of “Equal, diverse and LGTBphobia-free universities”. During the conference, the formal constitution of the Network was announced, and the work carried out during the congress was presented to the public.
