How does science work? What are the main methods used in scientific research? How is knowledge organised and managed in the field of science? The Publications Service of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) recently published the book Las claves de la investigación científica, by Julio Mario Hoyos and Juan Carlos Moreno, which aims to answer all the key aspects and become a guide to understanding the world of scientific research. The volume addresses these questions with a non-specialised language and a pedagogical purpose, and offers useful guidelines for scientists in the task of research, for educators in the training of research skills, and for science administrators in the management of research.

Las claves de la investigación científica offers the reader a set of tools to unravel the multiple aspects affecting this process from the analysis of scientific practices, from recent perspectives on science, and from an interdisciplinary point of view, the product of the joint work of a scientist and a philosopher.

The book is part of the UAB's popular science collection "El espejo y la lámpara", has been published in paper and digital format, and was presented yesterday, 25 January, at the Documenta bookshop in Barcelona. The event was attended by Daniel Rico, professor and director of the Department of Art and Musicology at the UAB, and director of the collection "El espejo y la lámpara", and Álvaro Serrano Morrás, graduate in Biology from the UAB, master in Bioinformatics for Health Sciences from the Pompeu Fabra University, and PhD student at the University of Barcelona, and the authors of the book.

Julio Mario Hoyos was born in 1959 in Bogota, Colombia. He holds a degree in Biology from the National University of Colombia in Bogota and a master's degree in Animal and Plant Systematics from the same university, and a DEA and PhD from the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. He has worked for more than thirty years in the Biology Department of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. His areas of study have been the morphology and systematics of vertebrates, especially amphibians and reptiles (herpetology). In these fields he has published articles in scientific and informative journals. During his academic activity he has derived his interests towards philosophy and sociology of science in order to show students the importance of these in the integral formation of their careers.

Juan Carlos Moreno was born in 1967 in Medellín, Colombia. He is a philosopher, PhD in Philosophy from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the Universidad Santo Tomás in Bogota, editor of the journal Cuadernos de Filosofía Latinoamericana and president of the Colombian Network of Philosophy of Technology (PhiTec). For twenty-five years he has been a professor and researcher and has published several texts in the following fields: philosophy of science, history of science, philosophy of technology, bioethics, research methodology and social studies of science and technology.
