The UAB will offer three talks on rights retention, scientific journals and data repositories, aimed at research staff and administration and services staff, to promote the use of open access in the framework of the International Open Access Week, which this year is being held from 23 to 29 October around the world.

Open Acces Week 2023

International Open Access Week, an annual initiative to promote open access (OA) in academia and research, is being held worldwide from 23 to 29 October. This year the slogan is "Community over commercialization" and aims to raise awareness of the importance of community control of knowledge-sharing systems. The UAB is organising different activities to promote open access.

The UAB Libraries are organising two talks aimed at UAB research staff on the mornings of Monday 23 October and Wednesday 25 October, and a conference on scientific journals organised by the UAB Publications Service.

These talks will address the retention of rights, a concept that has recently appeared in laws and in the requirements of funding agencies as another tool to make open and immediate access to knowledge a reality. It is considered necessary that both research staff and the institutions to which they belong retain the necessary rights to be able to freely reuse research results.

Thus, on Monday, 23 October, from 10 to 11.30 a.m., the talk "Retaining rights: keep your rights to advance open science" will be given.

This talk will present the results of the Retain project, which has analysed different institutional policies for retaining the rights to exploit scientific production, and will discuss the key elements to be taken into account when implementing a rights retention policy.

The speaker will be Ignasi Labastida, PhD in Physics from the University of Barcelona and head of the UB's CRAI Research Unit. He is currently the UB Rector's Delegate for Open Science, coordinator of the LERU Policy Group on Information and Open Access, member of the LERU Open Science Ambassadors Network and chair of the SPARC Europe Steering Committee.

The talk will be offered online through Teams. To attend, it is essential to register before 19 October using the following form: https://www.bib.uab.cat/formacio/inscripcio.php?id=8073.

On Tuesday 24 October, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a Conference on UAB scientific journals, organised by the UAB Publications Service, designed as a meeting place for the editorial teams of UAB journals to share knowledge, experiences, challenges, etc., and to discuss the topics that the editorial teams consider most relevant. It is aimed at research, administration and services staff, and  will take place in person in the Journals Hall of the Humanities Library. You must register using this form before 20 October.

On Wednesday 25 October, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, data and data repositories will be discussed. Under the title "Research data: what you need to know", Mireia Alcalà, lead data curation technician of the Open Science Area of the Consortium of University Services of Catalonia (CSUC), and Damià Gil, teaching and research support librarian of the Science and Technology Library, specialised in open science, accreditations, bibliographic managers and bibliometric indicators, will give a talk.

In the first part of this training activity, the talk "Do you have a dataset and want to make it FAIR? Publish it in CORA.RDR!" will present CORA.RDR, a multidisciplinary data repository that allows researchers in the Catalan research system to publish research data in FAIR mode and in compliance with the requirements of funding agencies. In addition, other features of this repository will be shown, as well as the benefits that publishing datasets can bring.

In the second part, the talk "The data management plan: how to complete the FAIR section" will address the data management plan, which contains the FAIR principles with which the repository chosen to deposit research data must comply. Each of the required elements will be explained, as well as the type of information that should be included.

To attend please sign up before 23 October through this form
