The UAB opposes the escalation of hostilities in the Middle East
The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona wishes to express its deep concern at the war scenario unleashed in the Middle East and its potential for international escalation.
As a public institution committed to the values of peace, democracy and human rights, the UAB calls for a peaceful solution to the conflict that allows Iran to advance towards a democratic transition, led by its own citizens and with the support, where appropriate, of the international community, with full respect for fundamental rights. We therefore categorically reject any form of violence as a means of resolving political or geopolitical conflicts.
The UAB considers that the attack by the United States and Israel exacerbates an already deeply tense situation, increasing the suffering of an Iranian civilian population that has the right to live in peace, security and freedom. This joint military operation violates international law, which should always be the framework for a fair and lasting resolution of conflicts.
The use of violence – employed by both aggressor states and the Iranian government when attacking neighbouring countries – highlights the failure of the international community to establish effective mechanisms for dialogue and negotiation. For this reason, we call for an immediate end to all armed actions, particularly those affecting the civilian population.
From day one, the UAB has made itself available to all Iranian students studying at the UAB to aid them in anything within the University's power, and we express our solidarity and full support for the university community in both Iran and the wider Middle East.
