The UAB is ninth in Veterinary Medicine according to the Shanghai ranking
The UAB occupies ninth place worldwide in the field of veterinary medicine according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the ranking conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The UAB features among the 51 to 75 best universities in agricultural sciences, among the 76 to 100 best in mathematics, geography, ecology, economics and biotechnology; and among the 101 to 150 range in physics, scientific and technological instrumentation, human biology, pharmacology, science and environmental engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology; and among the 151 to 200 best institutes in the fields of chemistry, biology, clinical medicine, public health, medical technology, food science and technology, energy and science, and materials engineering.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in June 2003. ARWU takes into account six objective indicators in its classification of universities: the number of students and professors with a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal, the number of high impact scientific articles selected by Thomson Reuters, the number of articles published in Nature and Science, the number of articles in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and the relative performance of each university.
