The UAB announces the loss of Emilio Lora-Tamayo

Emilio Lora-Tamayo, president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and professor of electronics at the UAB, passed away on Friday 29 March 2024. The UAB wishes to express its most heartfelt condolences to all those who knew and loved him.

After graduating in Physics in 1972, Emilio Lora-Tamayo obtained the Diplôme d'Études Approfondies at the Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse and in 1977 received his PhD in Physics from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. In 1989 he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering at the UAB as professor.

Lora-Tamayo was twice (2003-2004 and at present) president of the CSIC, the largest public scientific research organisation in Spain and the third largest in Europe.

He was researcher at the Ècole Nationale Supérieure d'Aéronautique et de l'Espace (Toulouse), at the Laboratoire d'Automatique et ses Applications Spatiales (Toulouse), and at the Laboratoire d'Electronique et de l'Informatique (Grenoble, France), as well as a visiting professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences of the University of California, Berkeley. He was director of the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona-National Microelectronics Centre and its "Integrated Micro- and Nano-fabrication Clean Room". He also coordinated the Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster (BCN-b).

His main area of work was in the microelectronics and nanotechnology field. In this field he published more than 100 articles in scientific journals and presented 150 communications in national and international conferences. He co-authored seven patents and a dozen specialised books and book chapters, and participated in and/or directed more than 50 national and international R&D projects. In addition, he was chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Prestige oil spill.
