The UAB and the Spanish Ministry for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory create the Chair in Democratic Memory
The Ministry for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) have officially established the UAB Chair in Democratic Memory, the first in Catalonia, with the aim of contributing to the generation, application and dissemination of knowledge in the areas related to the field of democratic memory.
Directed by Carme Molinero, UAB emeritus professor of Contemporary History, the Chair in Democratic Memory aims to programme activities inside and outside the university environment that are related to democratic memory, as well as to promote the dissemination and advancement of historical knowledge that affects the civic and historical culture of society as a whole.
The new chair falls within the functions of the Secretariat of State for Democratic Memory, responsible for state policy on historical and democratic memory and for promoting the dissemination, training and capacity-building actions in this area. The UAB will contribute with its experience in research, knowledge transfer, and social projection, in coherence with its statutes and the Organic Law of the University System.
The ministry will provide up to a maximum of 150,000 euros during the three years of the initial validity of the agreement (2026-2028) for scientific conferences, seminars and dissemination sessions; training activities and participation in R&D projects; presentation of books and teaching materials; screening of visual and documentary materials; the study of the treatment of the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship in secondary school textbooks; as well as the creation of memory networks with other universities.
