The Faculties of Science and of Biosciences inaugurate mural by Philip Stanton

On 22 April, the UAB inaugurated a mural by Philip Stanton located on the southern entrance to the Faculties of Science and of Biosciences of a tree, symbol of life and science. Using vivdly coloured mosaics, the mural represents eight scientists surrounded by different concepts and symbols related to the areas of science and bioscience.

The scientists represented in the mural, from left to right, are: 

- Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017), who worked on the geometry of space and revolutionised modern mathematics related to geometry and dynamics. She was honoured with a Fields Medal in 2014 (International Medal for Outstanding Discoveries in Mathematics).

- Stephen Hawking (1942-2018), theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist and scientific disseminator. He studied black holes and spacetime singularities within the framework of general relativity.

- Barbara McClintock (1902-1992), botanist and geneticist specialising in cytogenetics. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of mobile genetic elements.

- Linus C. Pauling (1901-1994), physicist and chemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his campaign against nuclear weapons testing.

- Marie Tharp (1920-2006), geologist, oceanographer and cartographer who created the first scientific map of the whole ocean floor.

- Charles R. Darwin (1802-1889), naturalist, geologist and biologist. Author of On the Origin of Species (1859), the book which llibre on va plantejar la idea de l'evolució biològica a través de la selecció natural.

Jane Goodall (1934-), anthropologist, primatologist and ethologist, pioneer in the scientific study of social and family interactions among chimpanzees.

- Leonor Michaelis (1875-1949), biochemist, chemist, physicist and physician. Alongside Maud Menten, he worked on enzyme kinetics and proposed the Michaelis-Menten kinetics model.

Philip Stanton (Columbus, Ohio, EUA, 1962) is a renowned visual artist, painter, illustrator and designer who lives in Barcelona since 1988. His work focuses on creating communication projects for different media channels and many of his pieces have formed part of large urban projects, advertising campaigns, product designs and books for children and adults. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree from Rollins College (Winter Park, Florida) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He also lectures at the university schools EINA (UAB) and BAU (UVic).
