Tatsuo Itoh to be awarded Honorary Doctorate by UAB

On 14 October the ceremony will be held to confer an Honorary UAB Doctorate on Tatsuo Itoh, a professor at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). The ceremony will take place at noon, in the Auditorium (Sala d'Actes) of the Rectorat building. This is the first Honorary Doctorate ever to be proposed by the School of Engineering. The patron for the ceremony will be Ferran Martín, a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering.

Prof. Itoh is probably the most influential researcher today in the field of radio frequency and microwave engineering, as witnessed by his 48 books and book chapters, over 440 articles, 80 supervised theses, ten patents and over 32,000 citations, according to Google Scholar.

Foremost among his contributions are the design of communication circuits and antennas based on the so-called metamaterials, a field in which Prof. Itoh is one of the great trailblazers. His work has opened up a new paradigm in which the traditional elements that make up communication circuits are being replaced by artificial lines inspired by metamaterials, allowing performance levels and functionalities that were unthinkable a few years back.

In addition, Prof. Itoh has been a source of inspiration and a valued collaborator with the UAB researchers working in this field – in particular the CIMITEC Group (and TECNIO centre) of the Department of Electronic Engineering.
