Students from the UAB School of Engineering win the European phase of the Huawei ICT Competition and will go on to the world finals in Shenzhen
The School's participants won first place in Europe in the Huawei ICT Competition 2025-2026 in the Computing category, a success that places them among the top university teams in the world and gives them access to the international final to be held in Shenzhen, China, in June.
The ERROR404 team, made up of students from the UAB School of Engineering, has achieved first European position in the Computing category of the Huawei ICT Competition 2025-2026, one of the most prestigious university competitions on an international scale in the field of information and communication technologies. This result grants them the qualification for the world final, which will be held from 2 to 6 June in Shenzhen, China, where they will represent Europe and compete with the winning teams from different regions of the world, in an event that will bring together the international elite of the ICT field.
The Huawei ICT Competition is an international competition promoted by Huawei with the aim of fostering digital talent, academic excellence, and innovation among university students. In the 2025-2026 edition, more than 220,000 students from over 2,000 universities in more than 80 countries and regions participated, consolidating it as one of the main technological competitions in the ICT sector on a global scale.
The competition is structured into three phases: national, regional and global, and combines individual and team tests. In the European regional phase, participants must solve highly complex technological scenarios in a limited time, which include the deployment and configuration of systems infrastructures, databases and advanced computing environments.
The winning UAB team is made up of Josep Bonet, a fourth-year student from the bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence; Ayman Bouazza, a third-year student from the Computer Engineering degree, and Wenqiang Ruan, a first-year student from the same degree. The team was prepared by Daniel Franco, lecturer in the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems. The UAB students demonstrated a high technical level and great teamwork skills, obtaining the top European score in their category with 943 points. A score that demonstrates a combination of specialised knowledge, intensive preparation and the ability to respond under pressure.
The participants had to configure and optimise, in an efficient, secure and coordinated manner, infrastructures based on technologies such as openEuler, openGauss and Kunpeng, demonstrating advanced skills in systems administration, databases, and computer architecture. The team achieved a total score of 943 points, with outstanding results in all tests: 500 points in openEuler, 272 in openGauss and 171 in Kunpeng.
This success is the result of a combination of intensive technical preparation, teamwork skills, and rigorous execution under time pressure, as well as the academic and institutional support received throughout the preparation process.
The position obtained places the UAB School of Engineering in a prominent position within the international scene of technological training and reinforces the projection of the school's university talent in high-level competitions. The final phase of the competition will be a unique opportunity for the team to measure itself against the best university teams from around the world and show the level of Catalan engineering on a global scale.
