Rector meets with handball and basketball players representing the UAB in the Spanish University Championships
On Thursday 23 April UAB Rector Javier Lafuente met with representatives of the UAB handball and basketball teams, who won first and second place in the Catalan University Championships. They will now be competing at the Spanish University Championships.
The Spanish University Championships will take place in Granada from 4 to 7 May.
UAB Rector Javier Lafuente, accompanied by Anabel Galán, vice-rector for Students; Xavier Gabarrell, vice-rector for Campus and Sustainability; and José Luis Muñoz; vice-rector for Training and Teaching Innovation, welcomed a delegation of students, members of the handball and basketball teams. The players had won and come in second place, respectively, in the recently-held Catalonia University Championships (CCU), and will represent the UAB at the Spanish University Championships (CEU), which will take place from 4 to 7 May in Granada. They were accompanied by Agustí Serra, director of SAF, and Carles Sisó, head of competitions at SAF.
While having breakfast in the rector's office, the athletes had a relaxed conversation with the rector and vice-rectors about the experience of combining studies and university sports at the UAB. Rector Lafuente congratulated them on their good results and wished them luck for the competition in Granada. Since the reception coincided with Sant Jordi's Day, the athletes received a rose and a book as gifts. The event ended with a group photo.
The athletes who attended were handball players Clàudia Ponce Orio and Júlia Ponce Orio (students of the Faculty of Law), Júlia Gómez Redondo (student of the Faculty of Psychology), Maria Rosell Alarcón (student of the Faculty of Science) and Yaiza Gil Costa (student of the Faculty of Biosciences), accompanied by their coach, Eva Bosch.
Representing the basketball team, Júlia Muñoz Pino (student of the Faculty of Biosciences) and Míriam Vilafranca Rodríguez (student of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies) attended.
