Rector demands equal opportunities at the Women's Science and Entrepreneurship conference
Today UAB Rector Javier Lafuente called to continue the work to "guarantee equal opportunities" at the conclusion of the Women's Science and Entrepreneurship conference, which was also the activity that closed the fifth edition of the Innovation Week, organised by the UAB Parc de Recerca. "Today we vindicate that science and entrepreneurship are done equally well or even better by women", he stated.
According to Rector Lafuente, "we can still not eliminate quotas" because "quotas are necessary when a system does not work". He recalled a series of significant figures, demonstrating that women are the majority at university, from undergraduate to PhD degrees, and emphasised the need to continue working towards equality in academic careers and have "more female university chair professors".
The rector considered that a day like the one that took place today in the UAB Theatre Hall is "an example of what needs to be done" and also wanted to congratulate all the people involved not only in the organisation of this meeting but also in the entire Innovation Week. According to him, "we have managed to make this a consolidated activity and now we have to work so that it reaches everywhere".
Yolanda Ferrer, Secretary of Feminism at the Ministry for Equality and Feminism of the Government of Catalonia, also spoke at the closing ceremony. She defended the idea popularised by feminist thinker Carol Hanisch, according to which "what is personal is political". Ferrer also declared that "if women are not there, our potential is not being exploited", denouncing that "a society that does not mobilise 100% of its talent loses opportunities". She also emphasised that "it is not just about putting more women in, but about transforming structures".
This year, UAB Innovation Week took place between 21 and 24 October and was attended by a multitude of research groups, spin-offs, external companies, public entities, and students. Among the activities organised were the innovation fair, the "Artificial intelligence, Art and Health Innovation" conference and the presentation of the Eines awards to social innovation projects.
