This year the American Council of the Blind conferred its most important award, the Barry Levine Memorial Award for Career Achievement in Audio Description, upon Pilar Orero, professor of the Department of Translation and Interpreting and director of the research group Transmèdia.

The prize, which was announced in the conference held by the council in Dallas, has been awarded to Pilar Orero in recognition of her contribution to the creation and development of audio description systems and the important service to others implied in her work to make accessibility a reality.

“Audio description uses words which are succinct, vivid and imaginative when converting visual images in television, cinema, DVD, theatres, museums, etc. The organisations and people we award our prize to are some of the world's leaders in this sector. In many aspects, they help people who are blind or visually impaired have access to culture and, therefore, they deserve this special recognition", said Kim Charlson, president of the American Council of the Blind, during the awards ceremony.
