March is full of cultural activities in which the university community will be able to enjoy two plays, “Solitude in Stromboli. Dreams, signs and symbols” and “The Misanthrope”; two concerts, a musical tribute to Mike Oldfield and another that recalls the legacy of the greatest female names in music; and two screenings, Modern Times and Fermat's Room. All the activities are part of the programme of our cultural card.

Programació Sala Teatre al març

The UAB Theatre programme for the second semester starts on Wednesday 1 March at 1pm with the show “Solitude in Stromboli. Dreams, signs and symbols”, a production by Nuria Casado that delves into the parallel universes of the work Solitude by Caterina Albert and the film Stromboli by Rossellini and highlights the plot and descriptive coincidences between the film made by the Italian director and the novel of the writer from L'Escala.  With a solo performance by the actress Fina Ríus, this theatrical representation demonstrates the unacknowledged influence that the Catalan writer exerted on the Italian filmmaker in his most famous film work. You can book tickets for this show here.

On Wednesday 15 March at 1pm, the Vers Retrobat Company lands at the UAB Theatre with “The Misanthrope”, a five-act comedy directed by Pere Sagristà-Ollé, which stages the most emblematic work of the French comedian Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known as Molière. The production tells the story of Alcest, a man who hates all of humanity and denounces its hypocrisy, cowardice and compromise. You can book tickets for this show here.

On the other hand, Xavier Alern, professor of Musicology at the UAB, and his orchestra of contemporary instruments Opus One are organizing a commemorative concert for the composer Mike Oldfield on Monday 20 March at 1.30 p.m to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of Tubular Bells. This was the first solo album by the British musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist who captured the attention of the music world with his originality and the quality of his music. An album that was awarded the 17th Grammy Award for best instrumental music and an international top seller, with over 20 million copies sold.

Opus One's rehearsal offers a careful musical interpretation, free of anachronisms and faithful to the spirit of the original recording, a fifty-minute piece of music with a classical structure, but performed on contemporary instruments. You can book tickets for this concert here

Finally, the group Quartet Moana, a string quartet of classical and contemporary music, is also organizing two concerts on Wednesday 22 March, from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 4 to 5 p.m., to highlight the importance of women in the field of music and to recall the greatest musical pieces by the most influential female composers in history. The concert entitled “Women Composers” features works by Maria Theresa von Paradise, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, Emily Mayer, Germaine Tailleferre and Stacy Garrop, women who have written their names in the history of music. Bookings for the first and second session are now available.

In relation to the UAB Cinema programming, on Monday 13 March at 4 p.m, Fermat's Room will be screened. It is a Spanish thriller that tells the story of four mathematicians who are invited by an unknown host to solve an enigma in a grain warehouse. Once there, the four members have to lock themselves in a room, the walls of which shrink with the danger of being crushed to death, and they have to solve several puzzles in less than a minute while finding out why they have been invited.

In addition, on Wednesday 15 March, at 1 p.m, the main attraction at the UAB Cinema is Modern Times, the second film in the cycle “The Immortals”, which aims to pay tribute to some films that are considered cinema classics.

All the above-mentioned activities are part of the programme of our cultural card.
