In relation with the motto of this year’s FM, “Stop LGBTI-phobia at the UAB”, this week’s edition of La Moviola introduces a student society made up of lesbian, gay, transsexual, bisexual and intersexual students, known as “Sinvergüenza”.

As the FM approaches, this week’s edition of La Moviola introduces Sinvergüenza—Spanish for “shameless”—student society. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersexual (LGBTI) students that make up the group describe it as a diverse community that focuses on every sexual identity or orientation that is not provided for by law.

This UAB-based student society fights to ensure continuous progress towards such goals as equal rights, visibility and empowerment for the LGBTI group. These are also the goals of this year’s motto “Stop LGBTI-phobia at the UAB”, aimed at raising awareness of the LGBTI group and highlighting the difficulties they permanently have to face in life and at university.

This week, UAB class delegate Miguel tells his personal story and describes what it is like to be part of the Sinvegüenza student society. “Being part of Sinver has taught me so much about LGBTI issues, feminism and activism,” says Miguel. “I have learnt how to introduce new members to the group. And I have had the chance to meet a lot of new people from other societies, both from the UAB and Barcelona.” On a daily basis, the Sinvergüenza group structures its work around three major topics: a social purpose, because the group offers young LGBTI and related people a place to meet up and get to know each other; a pedagogic purpose, because such a place can also be used to discuss, reflect and inform others about the realities of LGBTI life; and a protest purpose, because their struggle against inequality is based on activism.
