The UAB spin-off Vetgenomics will begin in September a pilot project in Sitges to identify dog excrements through DNA analysis and SNP technique (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism).

The project, named CanID (after the Catalan name for dog, can), identifies which animal the excrements come from and at the same time provides information on the possibility of the animal having parasites, which poses a risk to both the animal and the health of citizens.

Vetgenomics, born in 2011 and with headquarters at the Eureka Building of the UAB Research Park, is a leading centre in animal genomics. The company produces molecular diagnosis tools based on the DNA analysis of several animal species for use in veterinary medicine and in the pharmaceutical, chemical and agro-food sectors.

The spin-off's mission is to favour technological innovation by establishing R&D&I agreements with industries, maintaining relations with local and international Technological Innovation centres, and providing support (consultancies, evaluations and other services) to scientific research conducted in public and private research organisations.
