Whether democracy is in danger or not, and whether the younger generations are more sexist than before are the issues debated by UAB students (18-20 February), and to be debated by secondary and upper secondary students (23-27 February), in the local phases of the Xarxa Vives debate league championships, taking place from 18 to 27 February at the UAB. A total of almost 200 students: some 40 university students from 10 different UAB teaching centres, and some 150 secondary and upper secondary students from 24 education centres in 18 different towns, will be debating the pros and cons of these key issues.

From 18 to 20 February the UAB will be hosting the local competition of the Xarxa Vives University Debate League. This year's question is: “Is Democracy in Danger?”. There will be prizes for the best speaker and the winning team will go on to represent the UAB in Alacant in the final competition against the winners from each of the universities.

A total of 38 students are participating, divided into twelve groups, which is the maximum number of groups that can participate. The students are enrolled in degrees at different teaching centres, such as Law, Science, Biosciences, Medicine, School of Engineering, Communication Studies, Art & Humanities, Economics and Business Studies, Political Science and Sociology, and Education.

Secondary and Upper Secondary School Debate League

The following week, from 23 to 27 February, secondary school students will be competing by teams and debating whether the younger generations are more sexist than before. A total of 147 students from centres in 18 different towns will be divided into 24 debate teams.

The centres are located in the towns of Cerdanyola del Vallès, Granollers, Sabadell, Matadepera, Barcelona, Martorell, Terrassa, Parets del Vallès, Castelldefels, Lliçà de Vall, Sant Celoni, Vilanova del Vallès, Manresa, Girona, Gelida, Mollet del Vallès, Sant Vicenç dels Horts and l’Hospitalet de Llobregat. A total of 24 secondary school centres from the counties of Alt Penedès, el Baix Llobregat, el Vallès Occidental, el Vallès Oriental and Barcelonès who will be participating in the championship and in which the winner will go on to represent the University in the final competition, to take place from 20 to 22 April in the University of Alacant.

Secondary and upper secondary school students will debate the following question: “Are we facing a more sexist youth?” From Monday to Thursday, the group stage will be held, with six secondary schools randomly drawn to form a total of four different groups, prepared to debate three times on the day they are scheduled to participate; each day will correspond to a different group. The top-ranked team from each day will earn a spot in Friday's semifinal, which will qualify the two highest-scoring teams and ultimately feature them in the final competition of the local phase. The competition will be the UAB Theatre Hall.

Each debate will have a jury of four people who will evaluate skills such as teamwork, argumentative lines, and clarity of expression. The juries are made up of teachers, PTGAS members, and students from debate-focused groups (such as the Argumentation and Debate Group, and Unanimun).
