Creation of the Catalan Biology Society's Vallès Regional Section
The Board of Directors of the Catalan Biology Society approved in its last June session the creation of the Vallès Regional Section. The new section, which will be coordinated by lecturer Jordi Barbé of the UAB Department of Genetics and Microbiology, will be governed by an executive committee that will be responsible for carrying out the tasks of directing the activities of the section and relations with other academic, research and hospital entities.
The new section will have a close coordination with the UAB Faculty of Biosciences with the aim of "amplifying activities related to life sciences on our campus and in the surrounding municipalities, whether developed by research staff from UAB departments or from the campus institutes and hospitals linked to the University," explains Jordi Barbé. The actions will be aimed at UAB students and lecturers, secondary schools and teachers and, in general, to the whole surrounding society.
The Catalan Biology Society is a subsidiary of the Institute for Catalan Studies constituted in 1912 and is one of the most traditional and active scientific societies in Catalonia. It currently brings together about 1,500 members, 80% of whom are doing active research in universities or research centres. The SCB scientific conferences have a long tradition and are meeting points that allow researchers to create networks of proximity and highly effective collaborations. The SCB organises activities around its 11 territorial sections and 19 thematic sections, on the most current aspects of basic or applied biology. It also brings together a large number of secondary school teachers and other people close to the field of biological sciences.
