The 5th Institutional Conference for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities will be held on Friday 2 of December at 12 h in the Conference Room of the Rectorate. This year the event is focused on mental health, especially university girls’ and first-years’. The event consists of a round table, “Emotional well-being at the UAB: challenges in the current situation” with Anna Muro Rodríguez, Silvia Altafaja Vela and Judit Oliver Casas, and moderated by Lydia Giménez Llort. It is followed by the awarding of the Impuls grants and it ends with an artistic performance with participants of the Susoespai, conducted by Ariadna Martí. The whole event is info-accessible. You can look for all information in this years’ poster.

The conference has been organized by the Observatory for Equality of the UAB with the collaboration of the Disability and Specific Educational Needs Support Service (SEN), PIUNE, the centre for Studies and Research for an inclusive society and the University Social Responsibility of the UAB. Moderated by Lydia Giménez Llort, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine and Responsible for equality policies at the Faculty of Medicine.

The Impuls grants are part of the Impuls Programme, created by the Autonomous Solidarity Foundation (FAS) and funded by UAB’s Social Council. These grants are a line of aid aimed to UAB students with disabilities, especially those in a dependency situation. Grant holders receive financial aid for personal assistance during the academic day and for mobility if they require support to use public or special transport. The Impuls grants’ aim is to help people with disabilities study in the UAB and prepare for future employment.

The Susoespai association is a non-profit organization founded in 2009. Its aim is to bring art closer to people with mental health problems in order to promote inclusion and socialization. The staff at Susoespai carries out activities and seminar to stimulate creativity through painting, theatre, dance, clay sculpture and exhibitions. Ariadna Martí, part of the Susoespai team, conducts the performance.

In 1992, the United Nations Assembly declared 3 December as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day was born as an initiative of the United Nations to raise awareness and promote the rights and welfare of people with disabilities. According to the organisations’ latest data, one billion people worldwide are disabled. Moreover, it has been one of the groups most affected by COVID-19.

The Observatory for Equality is the Equality Unit of the UAB that draws up action plans on gender and disability. In 2018, the UAB approved the Second UAB Disability and Inclusion Action Plan (2018-2023), a tool to articulate policies for disability care and inclusion at the university. Students also have the support of PIUNE.
