Be a mentor and build links
The aim of the "Building links" mentoring project is for the participants, UAB students and girls that either currently live or formerly lived under guardianship, to find out about other realities and favour their empowerment. There is still time for you to join the project!
Mentoring is a social intervention tool that promotes a relationship between a person that willingly provides support and accompaniment to others who find themselves at risk of social exclusion. There are different types of mentorships, depending on the group with which the volunteers will be involved, but all mentorships share the same objective: to favour educational, occupational and social integration processes for children and teenagers at risk of exclusion.
This year, the Solidarity Autonomous Foundation (FAS), the IARS research team and the Coordinadora mentoria per a la inclusió, are collaborating with the "Building links. Girl-to-girl mentoring project". This initiative is based on the participation of female UAB students who meet each week with younger girls, that either currently live or formerly lived under guardianship, in order to participate in leisure activities, study together, talk and share their time.
The experience as a mentor is useful for finding out about other realities and different ways of seeing the world, obtaining skills and experiences from the accompaniment and building a relationship based on trust and friendship. At the same time, it facilitates the empowerment of young women. For the mentee, the experience familiarises them with the university world through new lifestyles, leisure activities, and future prospects.
In this video, two of last year's participants, Patricia and Rabia, tell us about their experiences as mentors.
To join the mentoring project, you must be a UAB student aged 18 to 23 years, be able to show empathy, be committed to the project and dedicate two hours a week to meeting with your mentee.
