Antoni Serra Ramoneda awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Balearic Islands

The University of the Balearic Islands has awarded an honorary doctorate to Antoni Serra Ramoneda, retired professor of the Department of Business and former rector of the UAB, in a ceremony which took place today in Mallorca. The economist, who was one of the persons most involved in the founding of the UAB, receives this distinction "for his scientific and social merits and his links with the Balearic Islands".

The appointment was proposed by the Faculty of Economics and Business of the UIB and received the support of Victòria Camps, retired professor of Philosophy at the UAB; Vicente Salas, professor emeritus of the University of Zaragoza and honorary doctorate from the UAB; Llorenç Huguet, rector of the UIB in two periods (1995-2003 and 2013-2021); Andreu Mas-Colell, president of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology; and Salvador Carmona, rector of IE University.

Serra Ramoneda was the secretary of the UAB's Promotion Committee and of the first Governing Board before becoming Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies (now the Faculty of Economics and Business), Director of the Institute of Education Sciences and, from 1980-1985, Rector of the University.

He was also president of the Agency for the Quality of the University System in Catalonia, president of Caixa Catalunya and member of the Institute for Catalan Studies. Among other distinctions, he was appointed officier and chevalier of the Ordre du Mérite National de la République Française and received the Narcís Monturiol Medal and the Creu de Sant Jordi from the Government of Catalonia.

He is the author of numerous publications on economic issues, as well as the autobiographical book Avatares de un burgués de Barcelona (Planeta) and Preferentes y subordinadas. Una tragedia española, a volume that forms part of the series "El Espejo y la Lámpara" [The Mirror and the Lamp] of the UAB Publications Service.
