Andreas Winter, lecturer of the Area of Theoretical Physics at the UAB Department of Physics, was recently awarded the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, under the framework of the foundation's Humboldt Research Award programme. The award was conferred on him for his contributions in the area of quantum information, and includes a cash prize of €65,000 to cover the costs of a maximum 12-month stay at the institute that nominated him, in this case the Technical University of Munich. Winter will spread out this stay with two or three months at the institute over the next few years.

Andreas Winter earned his Diploma in Mathematics from Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, in 1997, and his PhD degree from the Fakultät für Mathematik, Universität Bielefeld, Germany, in 1999. He was a Research Associate with the University of Bielefeld until 2001, and then with the Department of Computer Science, University of Bristol, UK. In 2003, still with the University of Bristol, he was appointed Lecturer in Mathematics, and in 2006 Professor in Physics of Information.

Since 2012, he has been an ICREA Research Professor with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in the Quantum Information Group of the Department of Physics. His research interests include quantum and classical Shannon theory, and discrete mathematics.
