The UAB to hold its First Heritage Week as a means of honouring its cultural and artistic legacy
From 13 to 17 April 2026 the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will hold its First Heritage Week, an initiative aimed at celebrating the richness and diversity of the university’s heritage (in art, landscape, documents, books, science and technology, the history of education, and intangible objects) through a wide variety of activities aimed at the whole university community.
For five days the Bellaterra campus will become a place to discover, reflect on and actively participate in seminaris, guided walks, and presentations of projects, workshops and exhibitions that allow exploring the UAB’ s heritage from an array of perspectives and disciplines.
The initiative focuses on heritage that often goes unnoticed, formed by urban sculptures, murals and works of art that give shape to the cultural landscape of the campus and strengthen its symbolic character. In this sense, the activities programmed for this week lend a cross-sectional and interdisciplinary look at the entirety of the University’s heritage.
One of the distinctive features of Heritage Week is the prominent role of students, who have designed most of the activities and will also assume the direction, conduction and public dissemination tasks. The event forms part of the teaching innovation project “Managing heritage from the classroom: a learning based on challenges applied to the artistic context of the UAB”, directed by Carles Sánchez Márquez, which introduces challenge-based learning methodologies in various subjects of the bachelor’s degrees in Art History and in Humanities. The project uses the artistic heritage of the campus as a direct resource for learning, analysis and intervention, and in this way strengthens the connection between teaching, research and the university environment.
The First Heritage Week of the UAB is the result of the coordinated work of several institutional agents and is launched by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and the Office of the Vice-Rector for Culture and Language Policy, alongside the Cultura en Viu Unit, the Artistic Heritage Campus of the Department of Art and Musicology, and the CORE in Cultural Heritage. This consolidates a shared commitment to the valorisation and management of university heritage.
