Communiqué of the Catalan public universities on the attack on the University of Beirut in Lebanon
The Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) explicitly condemns the attack on the Lebanese University of Beirut by the Israeli army. The bombing of the Faculty of Science of the Lebanese public university, located in the Rafki Hariri university complex, caused the death of two professors of the centre, one of them the dean of the same faculty.
The ACUP wishes to convey its condolences and solidarity to the victims and their families and friends, as well as to the entire community of the Lebanese University. It also expresses its concern about an action that violates international human rights law. Universities are essential spaces for the development of knowledge, research and training, and must be able to carry out their work in an environment free from any form of violence, particularly military.
The ACUP calls for a peaceful solution to conflicts and expresses its rejection of any form of violence, in coherence with the core values of university institutions.
The ACUP calls to continue to work for a just and lasting peace, as well as for full respect for the rights and freedoms of peoples.
