The UAB to replace its folder for a reusable bag: more space, sustainability and functionality
Starting in the 2026/27 academic year, students will no longer be given a UAB folder, since these will be replaced by reusable tote bags. The initiative has been launched after noticing a change in habits among students, with a reduction in the use of paper, and also due to the University's commitment to sustainability and in improving the usefulness of its promotional products.
The new UAB bag, made of 100% cotton and designed to be used daily, will replace the folder as a symbolic and sustainable welcoming gift
The UAB has decided to take a step forward and opt for a more sustainable, functional object that is adapted to the day-to-day life of students. Starting in the 2026/27 academic year, the folder will be replaced by a large canvas bag, designed to accompany students both on and off campus.
For many years, the UAB folder has been one of the most emblematic elements of the University's image. Its presence under the arm of students on public transport and in the street has made it a tool for raising the visibility of the UAB brand and a symbol shared by thousands of people.
However, as a result of the pandemic and the progressive digitalisation of teaching, the use of folders (and paper in general) has decreased significantly. Each year, fewer units were produced and the number of folders that are not collected or that are kept as souvenirs, without effective use, is increasing. This change in habits has led the University to rethink the model of welcome product that it gives to students.
The new UAB bag is made of 100% cotton, with a design for all audiences and with the UAB brand as a central and visible element. It can be used to carry laptops, books and notebooks, but also water bottles, lunch boxes and many other things. At the same time, it is useful as an everyday bag, and can be used when shopping, walking or going to the beach, which encourages using it ofter and in different occasions.
The design includes an interior pocket, long reinforced handles, and a zipper closure, and is made with resistant and washable materials, with the ultimate goal of making it have a long useful life, instead of it ending up in some drawer. In this way, the bag also becomes a new visibility support for the UAB and a symbol of belonging and pride, just as the folder was for so many years.
With this initiative, the University reinforces its commitment to sustainability, reducing paper consumption and prioritising objects that respond to a real need. The change from the folder to the reusable bag marks a turning point in one of the historical symbols of and for UAB students, with the aim of making this new element a reference aligned with the values of the University.
