The UAB is sad to announce the death of Manel Parés

Manel Parés i Maicas, retired professor in the Department of Media, Communication, and Culture at the UAB, passed away on 27 August 2025. The University wishes to express its grief over the loss of a member of its community, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends, as well as to all those who knew and loved him.

Manel Parés (1933-2025) specialised in topics related to public opinion, political communication, and media editorial lines. In addition to publishing numerous works, he supervised several PhD theses. He was vice-rector in the governing teams of rectors Josep Laporte, Ramon Pascual, Antoni Serra Ramoneda, and Càndid Genovard. Outside the UAB, he also taught at the University of Girona and Ramon Llull University, and was a visiting professor at various universities in countries such as Mexico and Brazil.

He was the author of many publications, such as La ideología regional de la premsa espanyola (1966-1973) (Edicions 62), Premsa i regionalisme (UAB, 1981), Ètica, deontologia i comunicació (UOC, 2011), Introducción a la comunicación social (Promociones y Publicaciones Universitarias, 1992) and Mecenatge, patrocini i comunicació (Promociones y Publicaciones Universitarias, 1991), co-authored with Daniel Giralt-Miracle.

Parés was president of the International Association for Mass Communication Research between 1998 and 2002, and contributed extensively as a columnist to the newspaper El Punt Avui.
