The Catalan Ministry for Research and Universities has opened the TDCAT 2024 call for applications, aimed at financing PhD theses written in Catalan. With a total budget of 80,000 euros, around 130 grants are expected to be awarded, with a maximum amount of 1,000 euros per application. The deadline for submitting applications is 26 May 2025.

The grants are aimed at individuals who defended their PhD thesis in the year 2024 and obtained a PhD degree at a university of the Catalan university system, or outside Spain. The PhD thesis must be written in Catalan and be incorporated into the Tesis Doctorals en Xarxa (TDX) repository before 31 December 2025.

The following types of theses will be considered to be written in Catalan: theses written entirely in Catalan; theses with a European or international mention, written in Catalan and in another official language of the European Union, provided that the summary and conclusions are in Catalan; and theses structured as a compendium of publications, with the unpublished parts written in Catalan.

In last year's call, 129 grants were awarded, divided between theses entirely in Catalan (63), theses with a European mention (32), and abstracts of publications (34).

This initiative, managed by the Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR), is part of the Plan to strengthen the Catalan language in the university and research system, which also promotes actions such as the promotion of Catalan courses for international students, linguistic support for CERCA research centres, and the production of university manuals in Catalan.
