Ideal student profile

The master’s program is aimed at graduates in the fields of Arts and Humanities, Architecture, and other Social Sciences degrees who wish to train as managers and researchers of artistic heritage. It is also intended for other graduates working as professionals in museums, foundations, art galleries, and centers for documentation and exhibition of artistic heritage who want to advance their postgraduate education. Candidates should have skills in searching and analyzing bibliographic and documentary materials from various sources. An interest in art and learning, sensitivity, and a broad cultural background are essential.

Knowledge

  • Identify the basic principles of cultural heritage, as well as the history and theory of art, its management and its research at an advanced level.
  • Identify the main models and paradigms of the current debates in the history of art, heritage and visual culture.
  • Recognise the diversity of the problems related to artistic heritage in its different manifestations: monumental heritage, collecting, museography, market, curatorship and cultural tourism.
  • Compare the qualitative historical changes related to the management of artistic heritage in its different manifestations: monumental heritage, collecting, museography, market, curatorship and cultural tourism.
  • Compare concepts and knowledge from different areas of the study of art history and cultural heritage, identifying gender differences and inequalities in these areas.
  • Identify the procedures and strategies for researching, conserving, enhancing and disseminating the history of art, heritage and visual culture.

Skills

  • Apply the principles and procedures of searching, evaluating and citing bibliographic sources, using traditional and digital media, as well as the documentation of artistic and visual objects.
  • Determine the reliability, veracity and validity of documentary sources and artistic objects in research related to the history of art and cultural heritage.
  • Use methods of analysis and management typical of the fields of history of art, heritage and visual culture.
  • Critically evaluate academic texts and cultural objects related to the study of art history and heritage management and conservation taking into account the gender perspective.
  • Code data following the ontological, methodological principles and legal regulations of the different fields of study of art history, cultural heritage and its management.
  • Apply the basic principles on methods of prevention and use of technologies related to the conservation of artistic heritage.
  • Prepare written texts and oral presentations while taking the gender perspective into account in the areas of art history and artistic heritage related to conservation, management and transfer to society.
  • Use digital and traditional media to search for primary, documentary and cultural sources in the field of art history and artistic heritage studies.

Competences

  • Develop initiative and ability to adapt to new social challenges in academic and/or professional environments in the field of analysis and management of artistic heritage with respect to universal accessibility.
  • Provide innovative proposals related to the history of art and artistic heritage for the solution of social problems and challenges.
  • Act in the field of analysis and management of artistic heritage to identify and correct gender-related biases and inequalities.
  • Carry out research projects, reports and reports relating to the history of art and artistic heritage related to their conservation, management and transfer to society that take into account sustainability and environmental impact.
  • Interpret cultural and visual productions belonging to different periods, contexts and cultural systems through analysis.
  • Design and implement cultural curatorial and mediation strategies that promote the active participation of the public, the critical interpretation of works and the inclusion of diverse perspectives in exhibition or cultural contexts.
