The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Agresta, CREAF, WOWnature and Uforest join forces to launch a new innovative climate shelter project. The original activity, planting trees for a future climate shelter at the UAB, was cancelled due to drought and transformed into a day of reflection to think about viable alternatives to maintain urban greenery in a context of climate change.

The event will be attended by Joan Pino, director of CREAF and professor at the UAB, expert in forests and urban greenery, who will talk about the challenges and opportunities of nature-based solutions to create climatic refuges in Mediterranean cities. Following his conference, the technology tested at CREAF to make plantations effective and survive in the worst conditions, the Cocoon method, will be presented. Thisw will be followed by the presentation of a specific case study conducted by the UAB, the climate shelter of the Plaça del Coneixement, and the announcement of the winning projects of the Uforest School of Specialisation, an initiative which received innovative proposals for climate shelter for this square designed by 20 young people from all over Europe.

The event will also feature a symbolic act to explore the planned location for the future climate shelter, which will be symbolically and temporarily marked with 9 trees. The event will take place in the context of the European Urban Forest Week, with simultaneous plantings in three European cities: Milan, Dublin and Brasov.
