The collection, consisting of nearly 1,500 documents on archaeology, art, and history of the Americas, strengthens the university’s documentary heritage and highlights the career of the renowned researcher from Banyoles.

Jordi Gussinyer¿s Pre-Columbian Culture Book Collection

Jordi Gussinyer i Alfonso (Banyoles, 1929–2018) was much more than an architect, archaeologist, and anthropologist: he was one of the key figures in the research on pre-Columbian cultures, particularly the Maya and Aztec. Today, part of his intellectual legacy is preserved in the Humanities Library, which holds nearly 1,500 documents from his personal library.

His life trajectory was marked by exile, which took him to Mexico after the Spanish Civil War. There, he trained at the UNAM and ENAH, directed the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) in Chiapas, and participated in large-scale projects such as the construction of the Mexico City metro and the excavations at La Angostura.

Upon returning to Catalonia, he joined the University of Barcelona in 1978, where he taught until his retirement in 1999. In parallel, he published research that remains a key reference today, such as Los Aztecas, un pueblo de guerreros.

The collection now available at the UAB is the result of the initiative of Maria Dilmé Ros, former Director of the Humanities Library, and Professor Victòria Solanilla Demestre. This collection enriches the academic heritage and keeps alive the legacy of a researcher who successfully combined architecture, archaeology, and anthropology to deepen the understanding of Mesoamerican history.
