The Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) will fund 10 research projects coordinated by researchers from our center for the next 3 or 4 years. This call, one of the most prestigious in Spain, aims to foster the development of scientific projects that contribute to advancing knowledge across various disciplines.

The research team investigating gene therapy for treating Spastic Paraplegia Type 52 (SPG52) has successfully completed the first preclinical trials. These trials were conducted on neurons derived from stem cells of Abril Merino, an eight-year-old girl with the condition, and on mice. The research has been made possible thanks to the UAB's ongoing crowdfunding campaign, with significant support from the association La Lucha de Abril.

The Amics de la UAB association honored Dr. Elena Galea posthumously for her commitment to scientific research. The ceremony was held on November at Casa de la Convalescència, where Dr. Roser Masgrau, her research collaborator, accepted the award on her behalf.
