14th IET Conference: Ageing and Work. Challenges and Transformations in the Labour Market
The Institute for Labour Studies (IET) will dedicate its 14th IET Conference to examining the impact of demographic ageing on the labour market and the social and employment-related challenges posed by this transformation.
Demographic ageing is one of the major social transformations reshaping contemporary societies and, directly, the labour market. With this as a starting point, the Institute for Labour Studies (IET) will dedicate its 14th IET Conference to examining the social, employment and policy implications of current demographic changes.
Under the title “Ageing and Work: Challenges and Transformations in the Labour Market”, the conference will focus on issues such as ageism, inequalities affecting older workers, debates surrounding the extension of working lives, and the sustainability of pension systems. It will also address the need for public policies and institutional practices capable of responding to an increasingly diverse reality in terms of employment trajectories, working conditions, and social and gender inequalities.
The conference will take place on Friday, 29 May 2026, at the Plenary Hall of the Labour, Economic and Social Council of Catalonia (CTESC) in Barcelona.
The event will begin with an institutional welcome by Ciriaco Hidalgo, President of the CTESC, followed by an introduction to the conference by Óscar Molina, Director of the IET.
The opening lecture will be delivered by Alejandra Chulián, from the Universidad a Distancia de Madrid (UDIMA), in a session chaired by Óscar Molina.
Two round tables will also be held during the morning. The first, focusing on the labour market and ageing, will feature contributions from David Luque Balbona (Universidad de Oviedo) and Riccardo Dalla Tomba (Università degli Studi di Firenze), and will be chaired by Helena Ysàs (UAB).
The second round table will address local policies and experiences related to ageing and work, with contributions from Lourdes Charles (Somseniors) and Laia Sánchez Casals (Citilab Cornellà), and will be chaired by Joan Rodríguez-Soler (UAB).
The conference will close with remarks by Óscar Molina.
