In this MMT-inspired exercise, we will simulate key aspects of a monetary economy in the classroom setting, in order to help participants understand surprising facts about public finances, government spending, and the overall functioning of monetary economies. The exercise is intended to challenge conventional perceptions of public debt and government spending, emphasizing the pivotal role of sovereign governments in creating money and making it available within the economy, as well as the consequences of money creation for economic activity. The activity also explores the functional role of taxes, the dynamics of interest rate setting, bond markets, and the impact of governmental fiscal and monetary interventions on the economy. By using a fun educational exercise, we hope to reshape participants' understandings of public debt, government spending, and economic policies in an engaging and interactive manner.

Daniel Negreiros Conceição is an economist and a professor at the Institute of Research and Urban and Regional Planning (IPPUR) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). He is also the president of the executive board of the Functional Finance Institute for Development (IFFD). He completed his graduate studies in Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Missouri in Kansas City (UMKC), focusing on macroeconomics and functional public finance. He is one of the authors of the book "Modern Monetary Theory: the key to an economy in service of the people," the first Brazilian manual on the subject.
