Title: "Researchers Perspectives on Green Growth and GDP development: Insights from a Global Survey"

Speaker: Dr Manuel Suter, Swiss National Science Foundation

Abstract: The presentation summarizes findings from a global survey of over 3,000 academic researchers across 101 countries, providing insights into their perspectives on economic growth and sustainability. Based on two published studies, the first study investigates beliefs about the possibility of global green growth and the factors associated with these beliefs. The results reveal strong divergence, with 59% endorsing green growth and major doubts when examining the core assumptions on which green growth is based. The second study examines how framing affects expert assessments of optimal GDP trajectories. It demonstrates that whether economic growth is presented as a rate (e.g., 1% annually over 100 years) or as a factor (e.g., three times bigger in 100 years) systematically influences researchers’ optimal perceived GDP growth.

Bio: Manuel Suter holds a PhD in Behavioral Ecological Economics from the University of Bern. He is currently funded by a mobility fellowship (2024–2026) from the Swiss National Science Foundation and affiliated with Lund University and Copenhagen Business School.
