PART 1:  Advancing urban health equity in the age of health care gentrification: An expanded framework for understanding health care access

with Helen Cole (ICTA-UAB - BCNUEJ) and Emily Franzosa (VA-Bronx/Mt. Sinai School of Medicine)

Shifts in the type, location and delivery of health care services may provide increased access for some urban residents while excluding others, a phenomenon we term “health care gentrification”.  In this session, the speakers will describe the concept of health care gentrification and the complex ways in which both neighborhood gentrification and health care gentrification may lead to inequitable access to health care, building on our qualitative and spatial data from four U.S. mid-sized cities.

PART 2: Community-engaged Human-Computer-Interaction: Participatory design of a dashboard to bridge the data divide

with Yael Nidam (UC Berkeley)

Community-engaged Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI) approaches are best suited to bridge digital and data divides by creating tools and services alongside people most affected by data inequalities. However, instructive guidance on implementation remains scarce. In this talk, Yael will provide a detailed account of how the Healthy Neighborhoods Study planned and implemented a participatory data dashboard design process with its residents and community partners. She will share lessons learned and takeaways for research and practice.

Helen Cole, DrPH, is Juan de la Cierva Incorporation Fellow and Co-Coordinator of urban environment, health and equity research at the Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability (BCNUEJ), Institute for Environmental Science and Technology- Autonomous University of Barcelona (ICTA-UAB), and Hospital del Mar Institute for Medical Research (IMIM). Her research explores whether, and how, healthier cities may also be made equitable, placing urban health interventions in the context of the broader urban social and political environments.

Emily Franzosa, DrPH, MA, is an Assistant Professor in the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a Research Health Science Specialist in the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, NY.  Her research focuses on improving access to and quality of primary care and home-based services for older adults with complex medical conditions.

Yael Nidam is a researcher, urban planner, and architect. She is currently a PhD student at the UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning where her research focuses on health equity, climate resilience, and data inclusion. Yael holds a Master in City Planning degree from MIT, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from IIT.
