Calcifying phytoplankton ("coccolithophores") play an important role in the ocean's carbon cycle through their production of calcium carbonate platelets and photosynthesis. However, while the importance of coccolithophores is understood, there are still open questions about the contribution of individual species to carbon stocks and their distributions. Here, by combining a global coccolithophore abundance compilation with machine learning approaches we provide an insight into the distributions and contributions of key coccolithophore species.

Joost finished his PhD at the University of Bristol in March 2023 and is currently a Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol with a Secondment at the Alan Turing Institute starting in March 2024. His research is focused on incorporating observations and uncertainties in aquatic ecosystem models so we can better understand the key processes underlying aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Joost is currently a researcher Co-Investigator of the NERC funded CoccoTrait project (UoB) and the lead developer and PI of Agate.Jl (Alan Turing Institute).
