Title: "Environmental Justice on track? Environmental Justice considerations in assessing the "Green Tramway Tracks" Green Urbanism project in Berlin."

Speaker: Husseim Stuck, Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany

Date: Tuesday, December 20, 2022 Time: From 12 to 13.30h
Venue: online - HERE

In my research, I look at the Green Urbanism practice in Berlin through an Environmental Justice Lens. I employ 2 out of the 3 dimensions of justice presented by Setha Low (2013), namely the Distributive and Recognition Justice. In order to test both dimensions of justice, I employed a mixed-methods approach. For the Distributional Justice aspect (through quantitative methodology), I apply the use of Environmental and Social Indicators along the "Green Tramway tracks" project in Berlin to identify 'Good Practice' examples. Once these areas were highlighted, it was time to test the Recognition Justice (through qualitative methodology), namely how that population perceived that project and its fairness. The primary results in the 'good practice' area yielded Distributional Justice to be classified as positive and Recognition Justice as negative - both results can be true at the same time. From the bird's-eye view perspective, Distributional Justice can be categorized as positive and once we zoom in, the Recognition Justice lens reveals the perception of people interacting with that green infrastructure as negative. The research concludes with an invitation to inquire deeper upon the important question of Feminist Green Urbanism practices in cities for a more just society.
