Talk: "The economics of liberation: delinking from unequal exchange in the world economy

Speaker: Morena Hanbury Lemos, ICTA-UAB researcher

In this presentation, we will look at how patterns of unequal exchange limit the sovereign development of peripheral countries, revealing how colonial and neocolonial economic systems perpetuate global inequalities. We will focus on flows of resources and labor between the Global North and South, with special attention to Latin America, uncovering the structural imbalances that sustain this exploitation. Finally, we will present delinking as a strategy for peripheral nations to overcome these dependencies, reclaim economic sovereignty, and pursue self-determined development.

Morena Hanbury Lemos is a doctoral candidate in Ecological Economics at ICTA-UAB. She holds master’s degrees in Political Ecology and Decolonial Thought, and a bachelor’s in Environmental Management from the University of São Paulo. Her research explores colonial legacies in the global economy, focusing on unequal exchange and policies for economic sovereignty, decolonization, and sustainable resource use.
