Gràfic de producció d'energia renovable per tecnologia

The UAB has various renewable energy generation systems that have been progressively introduced onto the campus. Currently, renewable energy is generated from biomass, photovoltaic solar power, geothermal energy and solar thermal energy.

In 2025, renewable energy production stood at 1,676,919 kWh, equivalent to 3.7 per cent of the UAB’s total energy consumption (electricity and gas). Biomass accounted for 52 per cent of renewable production, solar photovoltaics for 36 per cent, geothermal energy for 9 per cent and solar thermal energy for 3 per cent.

In the case of solar photovoltaics, the Campus has evolved from the first installation in Plaça Cívica – which came into operation in 2003 and was designed to sell the energy produced to the grid – to a model based primarily on self-consumption installations.

In 2003, the UAB commissioned the first solar photovoltaic installation on the Campus, situated on the roofs of the buildings in Plaça Cívica, with a capacity of 50.5 kWp. This installation operates under a model whereby the energy produced is sold to the electricity grid.

Since 2022, the UAB has once again been promoting the roll-out of solar photovoltaic generation on campus, with the installation of new systems in various buildings. This roll-out has enabled a gradual increase in installed capacity and renewable energy production. The new photovoltaic systems in various buildings on campus operate on a self-consumption basis, meaning that the energy generated is used to power the buildings themselves.
