The UAB awards the Socialitzem el TFG project of the Department of Philosophy an honourable mention for teaching excellence for the systematic incorporation of Service-Learning (ApS) into bachelor’s theses (TFGs).
The 8th UAB Teaching Innovation Conference, held on 14 and 15 May, concluded with the presentation of the Teaching Excellence Awards, which this year introduced a collective category for the first time. The project Socialitzem el TFG from the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts has received an honourable mention in this category.
The Socialitzem el TFG project was created with the aim of implementing the Service-Learning (ApS) methodology in the Bachelor’s Thesis projects of the Philosophy degree in order to socialise the production, dissemination, and application of knowledge by linking it to concrete and real needs identified through engagement with the local community. In other words, it seeks to situate knowledge in context and connect it to the community beyond the classroom.
According to the evaluation committee, the project was recognised for its contribution through the systematic incorporation of the Service-Learning methodology into bachelor’s theses. The initiative connects final-year projects to real needs in the local community, fosters experiences of social engagement, and provides tools and resources that improve the design and assessment of these projects.
The lecturers Begonya Sáez, Alejandro Mumbrú, Stefania Fantauzzi and Irene Gómez received the award and, in their speech, thanked the students who participated in the different editions of the project, the collaboration of local organisations, and the institutional support received, among others, with many of these people present in the Rectorate Assembly Hall. Attendees also had the opportunity to view the audiovisual piece produced as part of this teaching innovation project, which forms part of the Toolkit Transforming the Culture of Knowledge: From the Privileged Epistemic Subject to the Network of Shared Knowledge, available in the resources section of this website.
Beyond the Socialitzem el TFG project, the conference also presented the objectives and work plan of the Teaching Innovation Group “Impuls ApS – Interdisciplinary Network to Review, Share and Consolidate Service-Learning at the UAB”, led by its coordinator Eva Castells, who encouraged attendees to adopt this educational approach and to seek support if they had any doubts.
For its part, the ApS Office was present at the gathering of resources supporting university teaching held on Friday the 15th, sharing a stand with ReptesUAB and ECIU University.
Finally, it should be noted that throughout the two-day conference, the importance of educational approaches such as Service-Learning (ApS) and Challenge-Based Learning (ABR) was highlighted in several sessions, as they connect teaching with real needs in the local community, increasing student motivation, fostering the development of soft skills, and strengthening the university’s social responsibility.
