Organisational structure

Service-learning at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona falls under the auspices of the Vice-Rectorate for Studies and Quality and is managed at the technical level by the Service-Learning Office. In addition, SL is organised through a number of committees, each with distinct roles and responsabilities: 

 

Permanent Service-Learning Committee at the UAB

Members include the vice-rector for Studies and Quality, three PDI (from the fields of Social Sciences, Health Sciences and Science and Biosciences), the director of the Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS) and the manager of the SL Office. This committee is the driving force behind SL at the UAB and coordinates and promotes strategic actions aimed at fostering and achieving recognition for SL both within and outside the UAB.

Service-Learning Committee at the UAB

Members include one representative from each faculty and school on campus, in addition to the members of the Permanent SL Committee. It has a representative function, reaches agreements on the lines of action for SL at the UAB and presents proposals and channels information to the faculties. It meets twice each academic year.

Service-Learning Evaluation Committee at the UAB

This committee is responsible for supervising and validating Final Degree Projects (FDPs) and courses developed in this modality. The committee is tasked with ensuring that the projects comply with the methodology and criteria established by the UAB regarding Service-Learning (SL).

To carry out the evaluation, every academic year new teaching staff are asked to complete the Service-Learning Experience Identification Form, and the Committee assesses the projects using a specific rubric designed to evaluate the quality of Service-Learning initiatives.

Service-Learning Office

The day-to-day operation of Service-Learning at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona is managed by the Service-Learning Office, located in the UAB Challenges Hub (Reptes UAB) above the bar in Plaça Cívica. The Office is staffed by the Technical Coordinator and a student support assistant (through an extracurricular internship). The Service-Learning Office is responsible for the following functions:

1. Promotion of SL at the UAB

  • Dissemination, management and monitoring of SL initiatives.
  • Dissemination of the methodology among teaching staff and students.
  • Promotion of the organisations among teaching staff and students at the UAB.
  • Organisation of events such as SL Day at the UAB and the TFGs with SL Awards.
  • Reporting of all SL-related initiatives.

2. Promotion of SL among external organisations

  • Identification of social and environmental needs within the territory.
  • Incorporation of new organisations through partnership proposals involving SL.
  • Dissemination of the UAB’s SL programmes among public bodies and institutions.

3. Advice for teaching staff

  • Organisation of internal and tailored training sessions.
  • Advice for teaching staff interested in introducing SL into their teaching.
  • Networking with organisations from the territory that are involved in the field of study.

4. Networking

  • Participation in the ApS(U)Cat Network.
  • Cooperation with UAB Challenges.
  • Participation in other SL-related fields within the University.
  • Cooperation with the territory through social and environmental organisations and public institutions.
