The 13th National Congress and 7th International Congress on University Service-Learning (ApS(U)13), held from April 22 to 24, 2026, in Bilbao, has established itself as a leading forum for the university’s social commitment. With more than 280 registered participants and over 150 contributions in the form of presentations and posters, the event highlighted the growing interest in service-learning (ApS), an educational approach that combines academic learning with community service.
Participants from the UAB at the ApSU13 Congress
Jointly organized by the University of the Basque Country, Mondragon University, and University of Deusto, the congress offered a wide-ranging programme of activities, with sessions focused on issues such as the institutionalization of service-learning (ApS) at universities, justice, research on ApS and its pedagogy, the evaluation of its impact, and social justice. The roundtable format encouraged participation and the exchange of views on the topics discussed, while the programme was complemented by plenary sessions, contributions from students and organizations, networking opportunities, workshops, and award ceremonies.
The participation of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB)
The Autonomous University of Barcelona had an active presence at the congress, presenting as many as 12 papers across different thematic sessions and from a wide range of perspectives, with the participation of academic staff, administrative and service staff, and alumni. The UAB’s contributions focused on teaching experiences, research projects, and institutional initiatives, generating considerable interest and attention among attendees.
This participation and the interest it generated reinforce the UAB’s position as an institution committed to its local and regional community, while also consolidating its presence within national and international academic networks. Its contribution to the congress adds to the debate on the transformative role of universities and aligns with the goal of promoting a model of higher education more closely connected to contemporary social challenges.
