From the end of the Soviet Union to the war in Ukraine: a journey through the last decades of Russian history, society and media, through chronicles and journalistic reports.

Cartell de l'exposició Informar a Rússia

The Communication Library and General Newspaper Archives is opening the 2025-2026 academic year with a bibliographic exhibition dedicated to journalism in one of the countries currently dominating the news: Russia.

Many journalists have travelled there and recorded their experiences in chronicles and reports. They have made names and concepts known in the West that have become part of our collective imagination: the Cold War, Glasnost, Perestroika, Chernobyl, Beslan, Chechnya. Through their works, we have read and seen images of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Putin's rise to power, the annexation of Crimea, the invasion of Ukraine...

At the same time, Russia ranks among the lowest in the World Press Freedom Index. Russian journalists working for independent media outlets that are critical of the government – or considered inconvenient by the government – regularly face suspension, censorship and persecution in an unequal struggle against the state-linked media machine.

This exhibition presents a selection of books on the Russian media landscape in recent decades, as well as a collection of journalistic works addressing Russian politics and society. Visit it on the ground floor of the library.

You can request the list of exhibited documents via the Pregunt@ service.
