The researchers Irantzu Pallarès and Daniel Yero took part in the activities organised by the Faculty of Biosciences as part of the European Researchers’ Night.

The Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) played a prominent role in a new edition of the «Matí de la Recerca»», organised by the UAB Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) as part of the Argó Programme. The activity is part of the European Researchers’ Night initiative, an international event that this year was held at the UAB on October 2nd and aims to bring science, technology and researchers’ work closer to the general public.

Proteins against Parkinson’s disease and the language of bacteria

During the event at the Faculty of Biosciences, two IBB researchers gave outreach talks aimed at bringing cutting-edge topics in biomedicine and microbiology closer to high school and advanced vocational training students:

  • Irantzu Pallarès (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology / IBB) gave the talk «A future without Parkinson’s: the key role of research», explaining the importance of proteins in the development of neurodegenerative diseases and how current research is seeking new therapeutic strategies.
  • Daniel Yero (Department of Genetics and Microbiology / IBB) presented the talk «What do bacteria talk about?», focusing on the molecular and communication mechanisms that microorganisms use to interact and exchange information.

IBB’s hands-on workshops postponed due to rain

Due to the rain, the UAB cancelled all activities scheduled for the afternoon and evening. As a result, the workshops planned at the IBB stand, focusing on research into infectious diseases, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, will be held together with the other planned activities on a new date to be announced by the UAB shortly.

Through these initiatives, the IBB reaffirms its commitment to science outreach and to fostering interest in science and technology careers among young people.
