Who we are

The Institute

The Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB) was created in 1970 as a research institute of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Although the Institute originally focused on promoting basic biological research, over the last 20 years we have concentrated on the fields of Biotechnology and Biomedicine.

We conduct cutting-edge scientific research with the mission of improving the health and quality of life of the population through the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Our researchers participate in highly competitive calls, both national and international, aimed at funding their basic and translational research.

Among the 150 researchers currently working at the IBB, there are lecturers and professors from the UAB, ICREA researchers and senior researchers, postdoctoral researchers and doctoral trainees, as well as master's and undergraduate students. The IBB hosts 16 research groups organized into 3 scientific programs covering various areas including bioinformatics, cellular and structural biology, genomics, immunology, microbiology, and proteomics.

Our multidisciplinary nature is one of the most relevant features of the IBB and enables a broad approach to biological problems in a vibrant scientific environment. IBB researchers have expertise in various topics within the field of biomedicine and biotechnology.

The IBB is also strongly committed to the training of researchers following an international standard and is dedicated to the education of students, who will be key to future progress.

The IBB shares its building on campus with biotechnology companies and technological platforms: the Protein Production Platform (PPP), and the Bioinformatics Service, which are internal Service Provision Laboratories of the IBB; and the Genomics and Bioinformatics Service (SGB), Proteomics and Structural Biology (SEPBioES), and Cytometry, Cell Culture and Antibody Production (SCAC), which are scientific facilities that originated within the IBB and now operate as UAB scientific-technical services, offering their services to IBB researchers, the UAB community, and external users.
