Ameneh Alcalà and Ivan Campos achieved first place in the 11th edition of the European CASSINI Hackathons, an initiative promoted by the European Commission and the European Union Agency for the Space Programme to encourage innovative projects based on European space technologies.
In Spain, the 11th CASSINI Hackathon: Space for Water was held from April 24 to 26, 2026, at the Castelldefels School of Telecommunications and Aerospace Engineering. Participating teams developed prototypes and ideas during an intensive hackathon weekend.
Ameneh Alcalà and Ivan Campos (students of the Master’s Degree in Geoinformation) won first prize as part of the BluePíxel team.
The project developed a satellite-based workflow for water quality monitoring using Sentinel-2 data, detecting turbidity, chlorophyll, algae, and potential pollution anomalies. It evolved from a visualization-focused approach into a reproducible pipeline capable of analyzing multiple dates and generating GIS-ready outputs. Designed for scalability, it enables environmental monitoring and can be expanded into automated workflows using regularly updated Sentinel-2 imagery (approximately every 5 days).
At the European final, held on April 30, they achieved second place.
